The Ons Limburgs Museum (OLM) is a participatory online platform where stories from Limburgers are collected and enriched with content from the Limburg collections. Together, they form the collective memory of Limburg, a living feed full of stories for and by the Limburg community. Limburgs Museum challenged us to create a museum-relevant and appealing expansion of the website: a digital platform that tells the 'Stories of Limburgers'. A place that connects, deepens, and makes the museum's activities even more accessible.
With the ambition to lead in transforming the museum experience, Limburgs Museum committed to a three-part strategy, focusing on creating synergy between three different channels: (1) the museum building in Venlo, (2) exhibitions on locations in Limburg, and (3) the digital world, accessible to everyone. The goal was clear: to position the Limburgs Museum as the beating heart of Limburg heritage, both physically and digitally.
Inspired by 'The Participatory Museum' by Nina Simon, it was our shared ambition to implement this approach not only in the physical domain but also online. This method, which transforms museums from passive locations to interactive places where visitors actively participate, was the guideline for this project.
We realized that the museum of the future is not limited to one museum or collection. To reach a young and diverse audience, it was crucial to show that culture can not only be found in museums but also close to home. By being present in these personal and relevant spaces, we make an essential connection with their world.
The future of a museum is not to tell what culture is, but to find where culture is being made. The goal is to capture the 'Limburg feeling' and to make sense of it.
OLM invites Limburgers to participate in an accessible way. Through simple interactions such as liking, saving, sharing, quizzes, and polls. By uploading their own stories or multimedia materials. Or by becoming a co-creator. In this way, OLM becomes intertwined with the community. Accessible for everyone to contribute to the (intangible) heritage of Limburg, in a way that suits them.
