Founded in 1926, the Amsterdam Museum tells the capital's history through 100,000+ art and heritage items. Initially a traditional city museum, it's evolving into a dynamic hub engaging actively with the city and its residents. Redefining itself as a pioneering city museum- open, connecting, relevant.

The Question

How do we turn a city museum into a museum of Amsterdam citizens again? The goal is to stimulate participation, enabling visitors to determine the museum’s programming themselves and create a relevant museum experience.

Strategy

We crafted a platform focused on 'stories that connect,' elaborating on Nina Simon's 'Participatory Museum' theory: programming and collecting content "of, by, and for all." Here, we engage visitors in conversations using social objects from their cultural context, encouraging them to share their own experiences and perspectives, from polls to co-creation. By placing the collection at the heart of a narrative 'story-format,' we explore, expand, and enhance it.

Solution

In an intuitive design, the new platform organises this content, establishes connections, enriches it with knowledge, and brings stories to life. By adding the stories feature, it’s easier to craft engaging stories- integrating video explainers, stunning photo collages, and various interactive ways to engage with the collection. Presenting a powerful mix of content formats that resonate with the audience, similar to what they experience on social media.

The platform marks the first step in Amsterdam Museum’s digital transformation journey, laying the technical foundation for future developments such as a My Account and a mobile app.
